GENESIS OF POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF STUDIES IN ENGLISH

Post Graduate Department of Studies in English

The Post Graduate Department of Studies in English is the visionary brainchild of our beloved President, Prof. B. F. Dandin, who has been a mentor and pioneer of English studies in Gadag District. With his far-reaching vision, he aimed to impart quality higher education to the most deprived sections of society, extending educational opportunities even to the subaltern and marginalized communities.

His vision, dedication, and educational philosophy have always been directed toward the prosperity, growth, and improvement of academic work culture. His efforts were ably supported by Dr. D. B. Gavani, Co-Ordinator, Post Graduate Studies in English, who played a key role in carrying forward this academic mission with great enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment.

As a result of their sincere and visionary efforts, the Post Graduate Department of Studies in English was ceremoniously established on 08-07-2007.

The department began its academic journey with 13 students in its first batch. It is a matter of great pride that these students, the maiden gems of the college, successfully completed their Post Graduation with First Class and Higher Second Class, achieving an impressive 100% result. Many of these students later began their teaching careers in various colleges as Guest Faculty, and it is heartening to note that several of them are now serving in Government First Grade Colleges.

The department takes pride in imparting higher education on par with international standards, offering students in-depth exposure to diverse and advanced areas of English studies, including:

  • Indian English Literature
  • American Literature
  • New Literary Theories
  • Translation Studies
  • Gender Studies
  • British Literature with Recent Trends
  • Australian Literature
  • Indian Classics in Translation

The curriculum and academic environment are designed to introduce students to a conglomeration of issues, literary movements, and contemporary trends, thereby expanding their horizons of knowledge across national and global frontiers.

Special care is also taken to cater to the language development needs of students by helping them imbibe Received Pronunciation and improve their communication skills in a meaningful and effective manner. For this purpose, the department adopts the KISS Technique — “Keep It Short and Smart” — to help students communicate clearly and confidently.

To strengthen language proficiency, the Language Lab is utilized effectively and regularly for practical training and communication enhancement.

The department ensures that all necessary infrastructure and facilities are made available to all stakeholders of the Post Graduate Department. Great emphasis is laid on Teaching, Learning, and Research Activities, with a focused aim of shaping students into:

  • Dedicated teachers
  • Responsible academicians
  • Humane and socially conscious individuals

The faculty of the department continuously strives with sincere endeavor to promote, nurture, and sustain excellence in the ever-evolving field of English studies.

The department has developed its own legacy, academic tradition, and culture of excellence, constantly working to identify and address the academic and professional needs of all stakeholders.
